For over 16 years I’ve been in this advertising game.
And I seem to have done quite well for a game without rules.
At the start of 2016 I was handed the reigns as joint CD of the newly opened CHE Proximity Sydney office – alongside my longtime Art Director, Brian Jefferson.
This was our first time in the CD role – having previously been Associate CDs at M&C Saatchi on CommBank.
And we must have done something right. In the 12 months while I was there, we grew the place from a team of 8 to a team of 45 having won quite a few pitches including HotelsCombined and Cochlear.
The work we created has even been picking up metal at the recent award shows. So far we’ve collected at Cannes, Clios and Caples – clearly we’ve focused on the letter ‘c’.
But I left CHE Proximity right at the end of 2016, needing to step it down a gear while my family coped with my dad having the big ‘c’. Miraculously, we’re clear of that now – at least for the time being. So I’ve been spending the most part of this year as a Creative Consultant (there’s that ‘c’ again) on special projects at M&C Saatchi’s offshoot agency Greenhouse, working on Woolies. And I must say, it is delightful to be finishing work at reasonable hours.
So what is it I can do?
I’m a writer by trade. But more than that, I’m a strategic thinker who just likes solving problems. Any problems.
And I like making things that do stuff. Mechanical, technological, innovative things.
I can create the work.
I can sell the work.
I can deliver the results. (Truth be told, campaign results have always been my raison d’être.)
And I can also mentor new talent.
I’ve worked with some great clients and alongside some awesome people.
And I’ve learnt a lot along the way.
